Reframing Rest
Discipline is learning to listen.
Let’s get one thing straight: rest isn’t weakness. It’s the secret weapon your body uses to rebuild, recharge, and come back stronger. This includes and especially applies to your mental health. Yet for a lot of us, it’s hard not to feel the pull to just “power through,” and rest often gets sidelined.
I understand there are times when rest is just absolutely not an option. Maybe you’ve got kids or family that relies on you or there is something happening in your job right now that just cannot wait. Even in these moments I’m starting to realise how important it is not lean in to the idea that pushing through is somehow the stronger option.
Some of you might think I’m talking about an outdated idea. You might be thinking, I know rest is important but studies show that nearly 80% of people feel pressure to work while sick. That guilt stems from outdated beliefs that productivity equals worth.
My question to you is then, do you actually take the rest and recovery you need then when you are sick? Do you actually do what you know you need too? I know I still have that nagging thought in my mind that pesters me and tells me to push through and I’m positive I’m not alone in that.
So how do we reframe these moments and learn to give ourselves the rest we need?
Here’s the truth: skipping rest doesn’t make you tough. It makes you tired, inflamed, and more likely to burn out.
So here’s the reframe.
It’s not disciplined to push through. It is disciplined to allow yourself to rest and recovery. Why? Because for most of us it’s hard to actually rest. It’s the harder option to admit you need some down time. It’s also hard not to be able to use your pushing through as a badge of honor.
If you prioritize rest you don’t get to feel like a hero for “pushing through”. You don’t get to complain to people that you’re sick but you’re here working anyway. You don’t get to feel better than others because you are just built from tougher stuff and can push through. These are all the silent, secondary gains that come from the idea of not resting when you need to.
What I just said might have offended you. You might not agree and you might think, I don’t do that. But let’s be honest.. many of us have done that at one time of another.
Just something to think about next time you’re feeling under the weather.
Rest isn’t a luxury, it’s a biological necessity. It’s where the magic happens. So next time you feel the urge to push through, pause. Your body isn’t asking for permission, it’s demanding you listen, as you haven’t listened to it’s more subtle cues up to now.
Happy resting!
